Full-day Human Rights and Business Masterclass

Through their investments, Danish investors are connected to several businesses and business activities with actual or potential negative human rights impacts. The aim of this one-day masterclass course is to support Danish investors in being aware of and acting on the corporate responsibility to respect human rights. The course aims to capacitate individual ESG professionals on business and human rights.

The programme has been developed in collaboration with The Danish Institute for Human Rights who will present and facilitate throughout the day.

MASTERCLASS OBJECTIVES
Investors will be better able to understand and apply existing standards, tools and resources on business and human rights in their investments.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The training is aimed at ESG Professionals and in particular those who have already worked with the agenda in an investment context but would like to brush up on human rights substance and process standards and to be better able to operationalise them in their day-to-day work.

The number of participants is capped at 20 to support discussion and dialogue.

WORKSHOP Agenda – 30 October, 2020

9.00-9.15: Arrival and welcome
– Agenda outline and expectations for the day

9.15-10.15: Setting the scene:
– Short introduction to the role and responsibility of investors vis-à-vis human rights: key concepts: adverse impacts, impact involvement framework, severity and leverage
– Scope of expectations and responsibilities: Outline of standards and expected conduct (UNGPs, IFC, OECD, UNGC, etc.).

10.15-10.30: Break

10.30-11.00: Introduction to case study
– The case study will be designed by DIHR in a fictitious format but mirror actual realities of companies and projects/activities members typically invest in.

11.00-12.00: Case study exercise 1: Identifying impacts and stakeholders
– Introduction to human rights impact and potentially affected stakeholder identification
– Group work and plenary discussion: Participants will be asked to consider:

    • What human rights are at risk?
    • How to assess severity?
    • Who is the rights-holder and who is the duty-bearer?

12.00-13.00: Lunch

13.00-14.00: Case study exercise 2: Identifying involvement in impacts and leverage
– Introduction to involvement in impacts, corresponding responsibilities and leverage options
– Group work and plenary discussion: Participants will be asked to consider:

    • Mapping the involvement of various actors in an impact scenario: Cause, contribute and linked to?
    • What is the responsibility of different stakeholders and what does the concept of leverage mean in a linked to scenario?
    • Reflection on using and building leverage across different asset classes.

14.00-15.30: Exercising human rights due diligence in project finance
– Introduction to human rights due diligence in project finance – frameworks, actors and lessons learned
– Group work and plenary discussion:

    • How to implement human rights due diligence across the lifecycle of a direct project investment?
    • What is the responsibility in intermediated financing (indirect investments via funds)?

15.30-16.00: Key take aways, final remarks and evaluation
